CAUTION: Do NOT connect the USB cable now. Wait until the on-screen instructions prompt you to connect it. HP recommends using a USB cable that is less than 3 m (10 ft) long.
A print driver is a software program that allows the computer to run the product. HP offers a variety of print drivers and software on the product CD and the HP Web site. The available choices vary by product.
NOTE: If you are trying to resolve a particular issue or error message, reinstalling a driver might not resolve the issue. Unless you know that reinstalling is the correct solution, search for help documents that pertain to your specific issue or error message.

IMPORTANT : The CD that shipped with your product does not include a full feature driver for Windows 7. Use one of the following methods to obtain and then install the software for your product.

Method one: Download and install the HP Universal Print Driver from the HP Web site
The HP Universal Print Driver (UPD) is a single driver that provides instant access to multiple HP print devices and features. Follow these steps to download the HP UPD, and then install it.

Step one: Download the UPD
Follow these steps to download the UPD and save it to your computer.
  1. Turn the product on.
  2. Disconnect the USB cable from both the product and the computer (if you already connected it).
  3. Open a new window to browse to the Select Software and Drivers page:
    1. Right-click this link, Select Software and Drivers , and then click Open in New Window .
    2. If prompted, type your product number. You might also need to click it in a list of similar products.
    3. Click your operating system.
The Select Software and Drivers page opens.
  4. In the Universal Print Driver table, click Download .
  5. Click Save . The software downloads to your computer.
Hint: Make a note of the place that you saved the file, in case you want to install it at a later time.
Step two: Install the software
Follow these steps to install the downloaded UPD.
  1. When the download is complete and you are ready to install the files, click Open Folder , and then click the downloaded file. The file name ends in .exe .
NOTE: If you closed the Download Complete screen, browse to the folder where you saved the .exe file, and then click it.
  2. You can accept the default location to save the files. Click Next , and then wait while the installer extracts the files to prepare for installation.
  3. When the Install Wizard starts, follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.
Select the installation type you want. The following information might help you decide which installation type to use.
    Recommended Custom
For full use of all your product features : This installation provides full product functionality. HP also includes valuable software to help you get the most out of your product.

This installation type is designed to work for most users.
A custom type of installation might be available for your product. This installation allows you to install the minimum software required or the preferred software. Use this type of installation only if you have one of the following reasons:

    • The computer is low on hard disk space.
    • You attempted a recommended type of installation and received errors. (If errors occur during the recommended installation, fix them before trying a custom installation.)
The Recommended type of installation allows you to get the most out of your product.

Method two: Install the print driver in Windows 7
For your product, Windows 7 comes with basic driver built into the operating system (in-OS driver).
With this basic driver, some of the advanced product features are not available. However, using the workaround procedures in this document, you can still print from a software program. You can also import and view images on a memory card, if your product has a memory card slot.

NOTE: Disregard any workaround instructions or information about functions that do not apply to your product.

When you connect the product to the computer, Windows 7 detects the hardware and automatically installs the correct driver. A notification lets you know when installation begins and when it is complete. You do not have to download any software or insert the product CD.

Follow these steps to install the basic driver in Windows 7.

  1. Turn the product on.
  2. Connect the Universal Serial Bus (USB) cable to the product and to the computer.
  3. A Your devices are ready to use window might display on the screen. If the window displays and does not close automatically, close the window.
